Let’s Work Together!
Let’s Work Together!A description of the process I take my clients through when we create a memory portrait together. It starts with one of my favorite things: an hour-long listening session, where my clients describe whatever it is they want to remember.
Ilana and Lev
Ilana and LevA portrait of a new mom who had a long road to pregnancy and wanted to remember what it felt like to hold such a precious, long-awaited baby in her arms. The text in the back of the painting is her description of the experience in a font created from her handwriting.
For Glen, with Love
For Glen, with LoveThis piece was commissioned by the team at Galileo to recognize and celebrate founder Glen Tripp on his retirement from summer camp after 22 years. Since I worked at Galileo for over a decade myself, this was especially delightful to create. The rainbow streamers represent the “Fun Machine” that welcomes kids to every Camp Galileo site, and they are filled with photos from different Galileo locations and different summers past. The water on the horizon is made from a strip of blue painters tape, a material that anyone who has every worked at Camp Galileo is intimately familiar with.
La Vida de Lilia
La Vida de LiliaA portrait of an amazing woman, Lilia, whose life and heart are divided between two countries. The painting includes portraits of her parents, siblings, children and grandchildren, along with several old family photos.
Larry
LarryThe is the first of six paintings that were commissioned in honor of Donna and Larry by their kids. This is Larry, lover of classic cars and Thanksgiving turkeys, whose commitment to the perfect BBQ is so complete that when the electric motor on his rotisserie grill broke, he stood in the snow for hours, turning the meat with a makeshift handle.
Donna
DonnaThis is a portrait of Donna, part 2 of Donna and Larry’s paintings. Her warm smile, signature crewneck sweatshirt, and delightful sense of humor are captured on a background of a family quilt. The pattern is a friendship quilt, and it’s full of photos and symbols of her favorite things and people.
Soccer Games
Soccer GamesThis painting, the third in the Donna and Larry series, captures the hundreds of hours the family spent at soccer games and practices while Donna and Larry’s kids were growing up. Their children, Mike and Karen, have fond memories of those days and wanted to express their gratitude to their parents for all the time and effort they put into them.
The Girls
The GirlsThese are Donna and Larry’s granddaughters, the fourth painting in their series. They love drawing, crafting, and each other.
At the Table
At the TableThis is the fifth painting in the Donna and Larry series, depicting the family during a treasured family ritual: dinner time. Donna and Larry’s mothers are pictured on the back wall, and everyone has their beverage of choice.
Sunset
SunsetThe final painting in Donna and Larry’s series shows the family enjoying a sunset at their beloved beach house. The woman turning and smiling at the viewer is Donna’s mother, a vivacious woman with a wicked sense of humor. She passed away shortly before the painting was commissioned.
Kenny Jensen
Kenny JensenThis is what I call a “Favorite Things” portrait, a picture of physicist and engineer Kenny Jensen (who also happens to be my husband) surrounded by objects that describe him. Included are his favorite pen and notebook, coffee stains, a chess board, a stack of comics he drew for me to explain his doctoral research, the logos of all the crazy startups he’s worked for, a Rubik’s cube, his trademark red beanie, and a ballot showcasing his habit of voting for Kurt Vonnegut for president.
Meagan’s Favorite Things
Meagan’s Favorite ThingsThis is the companion portrait to Kenny, of me! Included in my favorite things are an Endpaper, my Apple Pencil, rosemary for remembrance, a Red Admiral butterfly for new life, and a magic rubber chicken for all my time at Camp Galileo.
Crabbing with Father
Crabbing with FatherThis painting was created for a client who wanted to remember the feeling of going crabbing in Maryland with her grandfather (whom they called “Father”) and cousins. The strips of water are photographs of the Chesapeake Bay.
Choose Your Star
Choose Your StarThis painting is part of a series created for a client who wanted to remember the insights that came to her on a trip to the Tahoe/Donner area. The stars pictured are an accurate constellation map of the nights she was there.
Focus
FocusThis painting is part of a series created for a client who wanted to remember the insights that came to her on a trip to the Tahoe/Donner area. The map in the background is of Tahoe and the words on the path are taken from photos of her journals.
Next Right Thing
Next Right ThingThis painting is part of a series created for a client who wanted to remember the insights that came to her on a trip to the Tahoe/Donner area. The hills are created from maps of the area.
Nana
NanaThis was a memorial portrait of a beloved cat, Nana, who passed away. Lilacs were her favorite flower.
